Amazing how $4-per-gallon gas can make us sit up and notice formerly innocuous economy cars. In all fairness, cars like the Mazda2 have always shown brightly on our radar. Sporty and stylish with a bargain-basement price tag and a fuel-sipping demeanor that will keep more of those dead presidents in our pockets, it sounds like a perfect fit. When you add in the Zoom-Zoom nature of your typical Mazda, the fun factor just shoots up to 11. We've already discussed this car a bit here at AB, and have even shown you 3- and 5-door hatches we've seen in the metal, but now we are starting to get more glimpses of the sedan version undergoing desert testing. Pictures like these from Fastlane Daily give us hope that this fun little car might finally be greenlighted for sales Stateside. The car might end up being identical to the sedan we saw in China, but all of that camo makes it hard to say for certain. Whatever we end up getting, it will probably be another fun option at the low end of the car market.

Yuck. I want a hatch.
Xcountryflyer @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:11PM
Totally agree, hatches make much more sense for maximizing internal space. When 4 door sedans get really short, they start looking like cartoon cars, but Americans really love having a regular trunk. Just as long as they don't skimp out on the 3 and 5 door hatches here.

Exactly what I thought. Who gives a rats ass about a Mazda2 sedan? It's already a really small car for the US market, why lose any additional space?
zoom_tuck_zoom @ Jun 4th 2008 1:29PM
I hate to bust anyones bubble, but that is a 2010 Mazda 3.
Sean @ Jun 3rd 2008 6:44PM
Want.
If this things size/engine makes it more fuel efficient than the 3 I might trade mine in.
Mi key @ Jun 3rd 2008 6:46PM
Why the Camo? Didn't they unveil this model in China some months ago?
I would rather see the 5dr model, but the sedan isn't bad either.
rouse42 @ Jun 3rd 2008 6:50PM
I think Im gonna take my RSX and cover it up in heavy Camo and ride around.
maybe it would spark some interest in a second gen RSX.
hj_786 @ Jun 4th 2008 7:34AM
Ricers should put camo on their cars instead of cheap bodykits and wings lol
Joce03 @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:01PM
Do the Mazda 2 and the Ford Fiesta share the same platform?
Seoultrain @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:20PM
yep
Fooman @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:26PM
I saw this car last Friday about 5pm on the 15 freeway south just south of the Fontana raceway in CA (I was doing the Lexus ISF drive) I do not think it was a mazda, it had a Honda car trailing it with Michigan plates. Traffic did not let me snap pics though

why is he screaming?
Jrejre @ Jun 4th 2008 1:03AM
I was thinking the same thing. That guy in the vid is really annoying.
styleguy @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:33PM
Thinking of it in a sales perspective, wouldn't the 2 sedan take away sales from the already great selling 3?
dinnercoat @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:52PM
Agreed. It would make more sense to offer it in the 5 and 3 door varieties, rather than edge into Mazda3 territory with a sedan. Assuming it makes it stateside, which I hope it does. In which case I'll be holding out for a Mazdaspeed2.
Noe @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:52PM
Mazda wouldnt care! as long as the $$$$'s still going to them
Mike White @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:54PM
That is a Mazda3 not a 2. Check the other 3 spy shots, it's identical. The 2 has a beltline that plunges downwards at the front and its front mirror housings almost go into the A pillar.
bc @ Jun 3rd 2008 9:22PM
Agreed, this car has dual exhausts, which none of the Mazda2s have shown but the new Mazda3 has.
emazzoni @ Jun 3rd 2008 9:32PM
It is the new mazda3 http://www.leftlanenews.com/mazda-3-future.html
Autoblog never posted these 'new' spy shots that surfaced like 2 weeks ago which are identical to these including dual exhaust. As well they show the new interior.

+1
for new mazda3
