We received word from a little birdie last week that Subaru was gearing up to release its brand-new Exiga into journalist's hands in Japan. Coincidentally (or not), a teaser shot of Subaru's new pseudo-CUV popped up on the NASIOC forum over the weekend and it's clear from the darkened profile that many of the elements from the show car have migrated over to the production model.
The Exiga, which appeared at last year's Tokyo Motor Show as a lightly veiled concept, will likely form the basis for the new Outback, slotting in between the Legacy and the Tribeca CUV. However, it's doubtful that when the Exiga (or Outback) makes the trek across the Pacific it will be sporting seven full seats. Its closest competitor here in the States is the forthcoming Toyota Venza, which aims to define a new segment between wagon and crossover, but in reality, both vehicles own their inspiration to the AMC Eagle, the original wagon on stilts.[Source: NASIOC via Straightline]

Looks like a SAAB.
psarhjinian @ May 12th 2008 1:59PM
Correction: it looks like what the Saab 9-7 should have been; a three-row wagon, rather than a Trailblazer sans cladding.

Doesn't it just look like the Current Tribeca?
mk @ May 12th 2008 1:42PM
Exiga, Gag me.
Legacy Wagon is dead. Long live the Legacy wagon.
DKB_SATX @ May 12th 2008 4:21PM
If this thingo is supposed to be the new Outback and be off the Legacy platform (slotted between Legacy and Tribeca, it says) maybe Subaru will catch a clue and give us back the Legacy Wagon. Mine's 3 now, but I'm not putting lots of miles on these days, so it'll probably be 4-5 years before I need a new one. They have that long, because I'm not buying a sedan, and I'm not buying a tippy-tall wagon in SUV drag.

Please, oh please put a stick in it.
Garythepowers @ May 12th 2008 1:46PM
It's just one of the many cross-over "I'm-not-a-station-wagon" station wagon.
The only wagon worth having right now rhymes with "Frodge Jagnum SRT8".
mario @ May 12th 2008 1:54PM
of all the wagons why the magnum srt8? God i hate that thing.
Garythepowers @ May 12th 2008 1:58PM
425hp makes it look mighty nice to me.

A minivan without the sliding door, which basically makes it....wait....a minivan without a sliding door. I hate the games marketing plays with disignations.
djSyndrome @ May 12th 2008 2:08PM
Oh, you mean the Magnum that was just discontinued by Dodge?
mario @ May 12th 2008 2:09PM
it's WAAAAY too heavy, chugs gas, and its cargo space is not much of a use because it has a small tailgate.
CalGuy @ May 12th 2008 2:18PM
That 'wagon' you're talking about, is classified by as a TRUCK (or by some insurance companies as a VAN!), just in case you mistook it for a station wagon.

So is the HHR. So is the PT cruiser. A sunroof turns a midsized car into a compact.
Federal bureaucrats do counterproductive things that only make sense if you don't understand the subject, what else is new?
Mike @ May 12th 2008 1:53PM
The Exiga is Japan only and looks absolutely nothing like the upcoming Outback.
jimbo @ May 12th 2008 2:17PM
And you know this how, Mike????
Ethan @ May 12th 2008 2:03PM
Sure beats another Tribeca...
gerald @ May 13th 2008 12:24AM
It doesn't take much to beat the Tribeca.
R_man_5K @ May 12th 2008 2:10PM
I would take it. I am in need of a seven seater and do not want a SUV or a miniVan.
ccweems @ May 12th 2008 2:17PM
When is Suby going to learn that the 4wd on every model approach puts them at an eternal competitive disadvantage when mileage is a factor?
The same folk that tax cars based on engine displacement may wake up and tax on the number of wheels driven.
